Category: IB CHEMISTRY INTERNAL ASSESSMENT

The Internal Assessment (IA) accounts for 20% of your overall grade in the IB Chemistry course, so it’s essential to do a good job on it. In this guide, you’ll find strategies and advice to help you write an IA that will impress even the toughest examiners and earn you top marks.

Know the Structure of an IB Chemistry IA
A successful IB Chemistry IA will have a clear structure that allows readers to easily understand the purpose of your work and why you chose certain methods and findings. The IA should include an introduction, methods, results and discussion section. Make sure to state the problem or hypothesis you are addressing at the beginning, then explain in detail how your experiment was conducted. Provide data and observations in the results section, analyzing it with appropriate descriptive statistics. Finally, discuss how your results address the issue you stated in the introduction.

Write a Rundown of All the Formal Requirements
Writing an excellent IB Chemistry Internal Assessment requires meeting certain formal requirements that must be adhered to. These include researching the topic, understanding and defining the research question, collecting data through experimentation or literature research, within-experiment analysis of data and discussion of the results. An appropriate methodology must also be chosen in order to ensure that reliable data is collected. It’s important to properly organize your work according to headings and subheadings so that readers have an easier time understanding it. Furthermore, include images, graphs and/or tables to help present data more effectively as well as provide accurate referencing throughout the IA.

Stick to a Goal and Plan Your Routes to It
Having a goal in mind and planning how to reach it should be the basis for your IA. By understanding what you want to achieve, you will be able to determine the best approach to take that is both effective and efficient. Establishing a timeline or schedule is also a good idea as it will help you better organize and structure your work. Whether it’s experimentation or literature research, decide which methods and techniques are best suited to finding answers while uncovering any potential limitations you may need to be aware of. This will help ensure that you stay focused and consistent throughout your IA.

Make Sure You Understand Your Data Collection Processes
Before conducting your experiments or assessments, you should fully comprehend the processes and techniques used to collect data. Having a clear understanding of these methods will help ensure that the results are accurate and consistent. It also allows for more time for analysis, as it eliminates any guesswork about the quality of data collected. Additionally, researching background information and topics relevant to your IA beforehand will help with understanding the data collection process further.

Conclusion and evaluation
After writing your IA, it is important to reflect on the entire process. Evaluate the design of your experiments, drawing conclusions from the collected data and then comparing it against accepted theories or established research. As you draw conclusions consider factors such as any errors that may have occurred during the experiment, in order to refine your assessment further. Utilize this step as an opportunity to further demonstrate how well you comprehended the concepts covered in IB Chemistry, and just how much you analyzed your own findings.
